How to Get Dog Hair Off a Couch: Rubber First, Vacuum Last
Why vacuuming first leaves dog hair behind, and the order that works: a damp rubber pass, the seams last, and a cover wash when hair is woven in. With a stroke-count formula built on MONVANE seat sizes.

On this page
To get dog hair off a couch, work in 3 steps: pull a slightly damp rubber glove or rubber squeegee across each cushion in one direction, lift off the clumps it rolls up, and vacuum the seams last with an upholstery brush. Most people do it the other way round: they vacuum first, and the brush skims over the short hairs that have worked into the fabric.
Before you start
Grab a rubber dish glove or rubber squeegee, a bowl of water, a vacuum with an upholstery brush and crevice tool, and a bag for the hair. On a 27.56-inch-deep seat cushion of the MONVANE Human & Pet Modular Sofa (4 Seats), a 6-inch rubber blade covers the seat in 5 side-to-side stripes (27.56 ÷ 6 = 4.6, rounded up). If hair is still woven in after that, unzip the seat cushion and back pillow covers and wash them by the care label. Never wash the foam insert.
Fall is when dog hair on a couch gets worse. Dogs that shed seasonally drop their lighter summer coat in the fall to make room for a thicker winter one, according to the American Kennel Club, so October is often when the couch looks its worst. The end your dog jumps onto collects most of it. Start there.
What is the fastest way to get dog hair off a couch?
A damp rubber glove is the fastest couch de-hairing tool most homes already have: 1 hand, 1 direction, and the hair gathers into clumps you can pick up. A dry hand or cloth slides over short hairs that have worked into the fabric. Damp rubber grips them, so each stroke drags the hair out and piles it at the edge of the glove instead of pushing it deeper. Keep the glove slightly damp, not wet, and rinse it whenever it stops grabbing.

Which tool works best on each part of the couch?
Match 3 tools to the 3 parts of a couch: damp rubber on the flat cushion surfaces, a vacuum upholstery brush in the seams, and a lint roller only for touch-ups. Each tool is good at one job, and the order matters more than which brand you own.
| Tool | Best on | How to use it | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damp rubber glove | Seat cushions, back pillows, arm tops | Flat fingers, light pressure, one direction | Wring it out; damp, never dripping |
| Rubber squeegee or rubber brush | Large flat seats | Pull side to side in overlapping stripes (see the Stripe Count below) | Let the rubber do the work; don't scrub |
| Vacuum with upholstery brush and crevice tool | Seams, corners, the gap between modules, along the base | Last, after the rubber has lifted the surface hair | Use the upholstery tool, not the floor head |
| Lint roller or packing tape | Throw pillows, arm fronts, a quick pass before guests | Roll lightly over spots you can still see | Uses up sheets fast on a full seat |
| Damp microfiber cloth | Fine, short hair the glove misses | Wipe in one direction, rinse often | Damp, not wet |
| Washing the zippered covers | Hair woven in after a heavy shed, drool, muddy paws | De-hair first, then wash by the care label | Covers only, never the foam inner core |

How do you get dog hair off a couch, step by step?
Get dog hair off a couch in 7 steps: clear it, de-hair the flat surfaces with damp rubber in 1 direction, vacuum the seams last and finish with a lint roller. The whole routine below uses tools most homes already have.
- Clear the couch. Take off throws and loose pillows and shake them outdoors, so their hair doesn't land back on the seats.
- Dampen the rubber. Run the glove or squeegee under the tap and shake it off. It should feel cool, not drip.
- Start where the dog lies. That is usually one end of the couch, or the dog seat module on a Human & Pet Modular Sofa (4 Seats).
- Pull in one direction. Work side to side across each seat in overlapping stripes and pick the clumps off by hand into a bag.
- Do the back pillows and arms. Back pillows top to bottom, then the arm tops and fronts.
- Vacuum the seams last. Run the upholstery brush where the seat meets the back pillow and the arms, and between modules. Use the crevice tool in the corners.
- Touch up and reset. Roll a lint roller over any spot you can still see, put the pillows back, and if a module moved, push it back against its neighbor at the base. The non-slip base listed on MONVANE modular sofas helps hold it there (more in How to Keep a Sectional From Separating).

How many strokes does a seat cushion need? Use the Stripe Count
Stripe Count = cushion depth ÷ tool width, rounded up, so a 27.56-inch MONVANE seat cushion takes 5 strokes with a 6-inch blade. Work side to side, one overlapping stripe at a time, front edge to back pillow, and you won't leave a band of hair in the middle of the seat. Measure your own tool; the 6-inch blade and 4-inch brush below are examples.
| Surface (MONVANE spec) | Depth | 6-inch rubber blade | 4-inch rubber brush |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat cushion, Human & Pet or Cushioned Modular | 27.56" | 27.56 ÷ 6 = 4.6, so 5 stripes | 27.56 ÷ 4 = 6.9, so 7 stripes |
| Armrest top, same models | 9.84" | 9.84 ÷ 6 = 1.6, so 2 stripes | 9.84 ÷ 4 = 2.5, so 3 stripes |
| Seat, Boneless Sleeper Sofa | 21.65" | 21.65 ÷ 6 = 3.6, so 4 stripes | 21.65 ÷ 4 = 5.4, so 6 stripes |
For several cushions, multiply by the surfaces you sweep. Three 27.56-inch seat cushions and two arms take 3 × 5 + 2 × 2 = 19 strokes with a 6-inch blade, or 3 × 7 + 2 × 3 = 27 with a 4-inch brush, before the back pillows and the dog seat module. Knowing the number up front keeps the last seat from getting a rushed pass.
When should you wash the covers instead?
Wash the zippered covers on a Human & Pet or Cushioned Modular sofa when a rubber pass still leaves woven-in hair, or when there is drool, mud or an accident on top of it. On the Human & Pet and Cushioned Modular sofas, the seat cushion and back pillow covers zip off; the Human & Pet product page says they "remove easily for washing away spills, pet hair, and everyday dust."
- De-hair the cover first, while it is still on the cushion, so less loose hair goes into the machine.
- Unzip and slide the insert out. Close the zipper again before washing so the teeth don't snag.
- Wash and dry exactly as the care label says. Each product page says to follow the care label for the selected upholstery and covers; the Human & Pet Modular Sofa (6 Seats) page describes its covers as unzipping for machine washing.
- Leave the foam inner core out of it. The MONVANE Product FAQ says not to wash, sun-dry or iron the inner core; wipe it with a damp cloth only if it gets soiled.
- Refit only when the cover is dry, then run the glove over it once to catch any hair the wash left behind.

How do you keep dog hair off the couch during shedding season?
Catch the hair before it reaches the couch, and give the dog 1 spot to collect it, such as the dog seat module on the Human & Pet Modular Sofa. The American Kennel Club notes that during heavy seasonal shedding you may need to groom your dog more often for a while; brushing outdoors keeps that hair out of the living room.
- Give the dog its own seat. The Human & Pet Modular Sofa includes a detachable dog seat module with a waterproof inner liner. Attach it to the sofa or use it on the floor as a standalone pet bed, so most of the hair lands in one place.
- Cover the dog's end of the couch. On a sofa without a pet module, a washable throw on the dog's favorite seat takes most of the hair, and it goes straight in the wash.
- Do a quick pass every day or two. In the weeks of heavy shedding, a short rubber pass keeps hair from being pressed into the fabric by everyone who sits down.
Which MONVANE couches make dog hair easier to manage?
The MONVANE Human & Pet Modular Sofa (4 or 6 Seats) pairs zippered, washable covers with a detachable dog seat module; the Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats) has the same zippered covers without the dog seat. All three facts come from their product pages.

Questions about dog hair on couches
Do dryer sheets get dog hair off a couch?
Dryer sheets can lift some loose hair, but a damp rubber glove does the same job without putting any product on the fabric. MONVANE product pages ask you to follow the care label and confirm the cleaning instructions before applying a product, so check the label first.
Can you remove pet hair from upholstery without a vacuum?
Yes. A damp rubber glove or squeegee lifts the hair on the seats, back pillows and arms, and a lint roller or packing tape picks up what is left. The one place a vacuum helps is the seams and corners, where a crevice tool reaches hair that rubber can't. Without one, run a damp cloth along the seam with one finger.
What gets dog hair out of a crushed velvet sofa?
Damp rubber, pulled in one direction. On the crushed velvet used on the Human & Pet and Cushioned Modular sofas, work in light, overlapping stripes rather than scrubbing in circles, then vacuum the seams with an upholstery brush. If hair is still woven in, unzip the covers and wash them by the care label.
Does washing the covers remove all the pet hair?
Not always, which is why you de-hair first. Loose hair left on a cover can stay on it through the wash. Run the rubber glove over the cover before you unzip it, wash it by the care label, and give it one more pass once it is dry and back on the cushion. Never put the foam inner core in the machine.
How often should you de-hair a couch while a dog is shedding?
A quick rubber pass every day or two during the weeks of heavy shedding, a vacuum along the seams once a week, and a cover wash when hair is woven in or after an accident. The American Kennel Club says seasonal shedding usually lasts a few weeks to a couple of months, so the routine is temporary.
Can you use a homemade spray on the cushions?
Check the care label first. The MONVANE product pages say to follow the care label for the selected upholstery and covers and to confirm cleaning instructions before applying a product. Test any spray on a hidden spot first, keep it light, and never soak the cushion, since the foam inner core should not be washed.
