Queen-Size Sofa Sleeper: Dimensions and Room Fit
A queen mattress label does not tell you the sofa's width or how far the open bed reaches. Compare those numbers separately.

On this page
A queen-size sofa sleeper needs three separate size checks: the mattress, the closed sofa and the fully opened bed. “Queen” does not specify all three. Two current La-Z-Boy examples use a 60 × 71.5-inch mattress, yet their sofas are 77 and 82 inches wide—and the narrower one extends farther into the room when opened.
Start with the exact model's measurements rather than a category average. A mattress that suits your guest can still arrive inside a sofa that is too wide for the wall, too deep when open or too large for the delivery turn.
Two queen sleepers, two different furniture footprints
These published dimensions were checked September 28, 2026. They describe the named configurations, not every mattress option or all queen sleepers. La-Z-Boy notes that dimensions can vary; confirm the current order before committing to a close fit.
| Dimension | Kennedy Queen Sleep Sofa, 510593 | Bexley Queen Sleep Sofa, 510681 |
|---|---|---|
| Closed outside width × depth × height | 77 × 38 × 39 inches | 82 × 38.5 × 38 inches |
| Fully extended depth, sofa back to open front | 93.5 inches | 92 inches |
| Mattress width × length × thickness | 60 × 71.5 × 5.5 inches | 60 × 71.5 × 5.5 inches |
The Kennedy saves 5 inches along the wall but needs 1.5 inches more front-to-back space when open. That reversal is why a narrower sofa is not automatically the better choice for a shallow room.
Also distinguish a sleeper queen from the bedroom mattress you already own. Serta's bedroom-mattress size guide lists its queen at 60 × 79.5 inches. The two sleeper examples above have the same width but an 8-inch shorter listed length. These are named examples, not a rule that every sleeper queen is shorter. Compare the actual surface with the guest's needs and check sheets against both length and thickness.
A room calculation can reverse the shortlist
In a hypothetical room, suppose you have 147 inches of usable depth from the sofa-side wall to the opposite wall. You choose a 4-inch gap behind the sofa, have an 18-inch-deep dresser opposite it, and want a 32-inch clear route across the foot of the open bed.
The 4-inch gap and 32-inch route are personal planning inputs for this example—not manufacturer clearances, accessibility standards or building-code requirements. Substitute the requirements of your own room and exact product.
- Kennedy: 147 − 4 − 93.5 − 18 = 31.5 inches remaining.
- Bexley: 147 − 4 − 92 − 18 = 33 inches remaining.
The Kennedy misses this household's chosen route by half an inch; the Bexley clears it by one inch. But that does not make the Bexley a guaranteed fit: its wider body must still fit the other axis, and a one-inch margin deserves physical verification given the maker's variation warning. If the wall span cannot accept 82 inches, neither candidate satisfies the whole brief.
This calculation assumes the dresser and sleeper overlap along the same front-to-back line. It does not account for an open drawer, door swing, radiator or the space a person needs while operating the mechanism. Draw those separately rather than subtracting furniture that sits elsewhere in the room.
Mark the endpoints, then test the furnished room

Our recommendation is to measure from the actual obstructions, including projecting trim, rather than assuming the advertised room size is usable floor space. Record the clear wall span, available room depth and any height limit from a window or shelf.
Tape the closed outline using outside arm-to-arm width and full body depth. Then add the fully open outline using the maker's stated endpoints. In the examples above, open depth runs from the back of the sofa to the open front: do not add the closed depth to it again. If a listing instead gives only the extension beyond the sofa front, ask the seller to identify that distinction before calculating.
Give the coffee table and any ottoman an actual parking place. Check the route to the room door with those pieces parked, not removed from the drawing. Open nearby drawers and doors, then consider where the operator stands during changeover according to the product instructions. Tape verifies floor geometry; it cannot prove that a mechanism clears a low windowsill or that a guest finds the mattress comfortable.
Check bedding and the delivery unit before ordering
Save the exact mattress width, length and thickness with the order. Match fitted-sheet specifications to those measurements. Do not order a replacement mattress or add thickness to a folding mechanism merely because the package says queen; replacement compatibility is a separate manufacturer question.

Ask for the largest delivery unit's dimensions, including its packaging where relevant. Confirm which parts, if any, the delivery team is authorized to remove. Measure the narrowest doorway and the turns in the hall, stairwell or elevator; an opening's width alone cannot establish whether a deep frame turns through it.
Keep the decision to four records: the actual mattress, the closed sofa, the furnished room with the bed open, and the delivery route. Choose the queen sleeper that passes all four. The size label starts the search; the exact measurements finish it.
