How to Unbox a Compressed Couch and Let the Foam Expand (Up to 72 Hours)
Unbox a compressed couch without damaging it, then give the foam up to 72 hours to recover. Expansion times by MONVANE model, a floor-space formula and what to do if a section stays flat.

On this page
To unbox a compressed couch, open the box where the couch will live, cut only the outer plastic, unroll it onto a clean floor, and give the foam up to 72 hours to expand. That is the longest recovery time listed on current MONVANE models, so judge comfort and seam fit only after it has passed. Contact support if a section is still flat after 72 hours.
Before you open the box: the included utility knife (use it carefully and keep the blade away from the fabric; do not use scissors on the inner film, which may scratch the product), 2 people for larger modules, and clear floor of seat depth + coffee-table gap + 30-inch walkway in front of the back cushions (73.56" for a 27.56" seat with a 16" gap). Then allow up to 72 hours before you judge comfort or seam fit.
Compressed ("couch in a box") sofas are vacuum-packed and rolled so they fit through doors and stairwells. The foam needs air and time to recover its shape. Most first-week worries about these sofas come from judging them too early, or from cutting into the upholstery while opening the plastic.
Why the wait: the foam was squeezed flat under vacuum and rolled for shipping, and it can only regain its shape as air works back into it after the plastic comes off. Thick seat cushions take longest, which is why MONVANE lists up to 72 hours for its deepest-seat models.
How long does a compressed couch take to expand?
Plan for up to 72 hours. Here is the expansion time MONVANE lists for each model:
| MONVANE model | Listed expansion time | Cushion build | Seat depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human & Pet Modular Sofa (4 Seats) | Up to 72 hours | Shredded cotton + 30D foam | 27.56" |
| Human & Pet Modular Sofa (6 Seats) | Up to 72 hours | Dual-layer cushioning; dog bed module with waterproof liner | 27.56" |
| Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats) | Up to 72 hours | Shredded cotton top + 30D foam base | 27.56" |
| Boneless Sleeper Sofa | Up to 72 hours | High-density foam | 21.65" |
| Convertible Loveseat | Up to 72 hours | High-density foam; 70-inch 2-in-1 | 21.65" |
| Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater) | Up to 72 hours | Chenille upholstery; 30D high-density foam | 27.56" |
Many cushions look close to their final shape well before the end of the window, but treat 72 hours as the point to judge the couch, not a countdown to rush. A cold room or a long time in transit can make recovery slower.
What should you check at each stage of expansion?
Expect flat spots and creases at first, a mostly recovered shape after the first day, and even seat heights by 72 hours.

| When | What is normal | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Right after unrolling | Flat or soft areas, creased fabric, a packaging smell | Remove every piece of plastic and give each module space and air |
| First day | The shape is mostly back; corners and armrests may still look low | Smooth creases by hand; avoid heavy loads on one spot |
| After 72 hours | Even seat height across modules, smooth fabric | Now judge comfort and fit; photograph anything that still looks wrong |
What should you prepare before the box arrives?
- Measure the route from the door to the room. Use the Sofa Size Guide and plan at least 30 inches of clear main walkway.
- Clear a flat, clean area about the size of the finished couch plus an arm's length on each side.
- Have the included utility knife ready. Use it carefully and keep the blade away from the upholstery. Do not use scissors to cut the inner film, which may scratch the product.
- For modular sets, wait until every box has arrived, then open and place each module in its final spot. See What to Measure Before a Boxed Modular Sectional Delivery.

How do you unbox a compressed couch step by step?
- Open the carton where the couch will stay. An expanded couch is much bulkier than a rolled one.
- Remove the strapping and carton, then roll the package to its final position.
- Cut only the outer plastic layer. Pull the plastic away from the fabric before each cut and never cut toward the couch.
- Unroll it right side up and let air reach every side. Remove any remaining inner plastic.
- Place modules base-first in your layout. MONVANE's boneless and convertible models list an anti-slip base.
- Leave it to recover for up to 72 hours, then check that the shape and seat height are even before regular use.
Keep the cartons and order paperwork until you have checked every module. After that, recycle the cardboard and plastic using the U.S. EPA's recycling guidance and your local rules.
How much floor space do you need before you open the box?
Place each module where it will stay, because an expanded module is harder to move than a rolled one. Use one formula:
Clear floor in front of the back cushions = seat depth + coffee-table gap + main walkway. Measure it from the front face of the back cushions, then add the back-cushion depth shown on your product page to get the distance from the wall.
Worked example 1 – Human & Pet or Cushioned Modular Sofa. MONVANE lists a 27.56-inch seat depth (the Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater) lists the same). With a 16-inch gap to the coffee table and the 30-inch walkway from the Sofa Size Guide: 27.56 + 16 + 30 = 73.56 inches of clear floor, measured from the front of the back cushions. Add the back-cushion depth from the product page for the distance from the wall. Set the seat modules first and add the 9.84-inch armrests last, so the seats set the line.
Worked example 2 – Boneless Sleeper Sofa. With its 21.65-inch seat depth and the same gaps: 21.65 + 16 + 30 = 67.65 inches in front of the back cushions, plus the back depth from the product page. That is about 6 inches less floor than the modular sofas, which matters in a 10-foot-deep room.
For the 70-inch Convertible Loveseat, unroll it parallel to the wall it will sit against so the up-to-72-hour recovery happens in its final position.
What if a compressed sofa is not expanding?
Before 72 hours a flat section is usually normal, so remove any trapped plastic and wait; after 72 hours, contact MONVANE Support with photos.
| What you see | Usually normal? | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Section still flat or creased within the first 72 hours | Yes | Check no plastic is left on it; wait the full 72 hours, then flex the cushion gently by hand |
| Packaging smell | Yes, in the first days | Air the room during expansion |
| Uneven seat heights between modules | Often a placement issue | Level floor; put all modules fully on or fully off the rug; re-seat base-first |
| A section still flat after 72 hours | No | Contact MONVANE Support with photos |
| Torn fabric, open seam or a missing module | No | Photograph it before regular use and contact support |
Do not use a hair dryer, heater or iron on the foam or fabric to speed things up.
Can you wash the covers after unboxing?
On the Human & Pet and Cushioned Modular sofas, yes. They list removable, washable zipper covers, and the Human & Pet versions add a dog bed module with a waterproof liner. For pet households, browse the pet-friendly modular sofas.
What should you have ready if you contact support?
Keep your order number, a photo of each carton label, and photos of any section that still looks flat after 72 hours. Support can then match the module to your order quickly.
This guide covers the first 72 hours after delivery. For measuring doors and hallways before the boxes arrive, read What to Measure Before a Boxed Modular Sectional Delivery; for joining modules after the foam has recovered, read How to Connect a Sectional Couch.
Questions about unboxing a compressed couch
How many hours should I wait before judging a compressed couch?
Allow up to 72 hours. That is the longest time MONVANE lists for its current sleeper, convertible and modular models.
Why is my compressed sofa not expanding?
Usually it is too early, or plastic is still trapped. Wait the full 72 hours, then contact support with photos.
Can you sit on a compressed couch right away?
Avoid heavy or long use on one spot during the first day, and judge comfort only after 72 hours.
How can I help the foam expand faster?
Remove all plastic, give it airflow, and keep the room at a normal indoor temperature. Do not use direct heat.
Do I need tools to set up a MONVANE couch?
No. These models list no-tool setup.
How much space do I need to unroll a compressed couch?
Use seat depth + coffee-table gap + walkway, measured from the front of the back cushions. For a 27.56-inch seat: 27.56 + 16 + 30 = 73.56 inches, plus the back-cushion depth from the product page for the distance from the wall.
