How to Clean a Couch With Baking Soda (and When Not To)

A dry baking soda routine for fabric couches that stays inside MONVANE's care lines (no harsh chemicals, no excess moisture, no direct heat), the Light-Dust Rule for how much to use, and why baking soda and vinegar do not belong on upholstery.

To clean a couch with baking soda, vacuum it, test a hidden spot, sift a thin dry layer over the fabric, brush it in lightly, let it sit for a few hours while the room airs, then vacuum every grain out in 2 passes. Keep it dry: MONVANE's care answer says to avoid harsh chemicals, excess moisture and direct heat, so skip the vinegar and the spray bottle.

Before you start

Baking soda is a freshening step, not a stain remover. For marks, start with the care line on your product page; the Convertible Loveseat says "Attached cover—spot clean with a damp cloth." If your care instructions are unclear, ask MONVANE Support before you put anything on the fabric.

Freshening is not stain removal. Dry baking soda is for surface odor. A stain needs blotting with a damp cloth. Mixing the two jobs is how baking soda ends up as paste in the weave.

Baking soda is popular for couches because it is dry, cheap and easy to vacuum up. Used dry and in a thin layer, it lifts surface odors from fabric without soaking the foam. Used wet, mixed with vinegar, or left in thick piles, it adds moisture and residue you then have to get out of the weave.

How do you clean a couch with baking soda?

Clean a couch with baking soda in 6 steps: vacuum, test a hidden spot, sift a thin layer, brush it in, wait a few hours with a window open, and vacuum twice.

  1. Vacuum first. Take off loose hair and crumbs with an upholstery brush, including the crevices.
  2. Test a hidden spot. Dust a little on the back panel near the floor, wait, vacuum, and check the color in daylight. New Mexico State University's home-furnishings care guide recommends this kind of pretest for any cleaning method, so you catch discoloration or surface damage before treating the seat.
  3. Sift a thin layer. Use a kitchen sieve held about a hand's width above the seat, so it lands evenly.
  4. Brush it in lightly. A soft brush, moving with the pile, works it into the surface. No scrubbing.
  5. Let it sit and air the room. A few hours, with a window open and pets out of the room.
  6. Vacuum twice. Go across, then along, until no white shows in the seams.

How much baking soda to use on a couch

Light-Dust Rule: about 1 teaspoon per 12 × 12-inch square of seat, in a layer thin enough to see the fabric through. Squares = (width ÷ 12, rounded up) × (seat depth ÷ 12, rounded up). More does not clean better; it only leaves more to vacuum out.

Freshening the whole couch

Worked example 1 – Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater). 75-inch width and 27.56-inch seat depth: 75 ÷ 12 = 6.25, so 7 across; 27.56 ÷ 12 = 2.3, so 3 deep. 7 × 3 = 21 squares, about 21 teaspoons, or 7 tablespoons.

Worked example 2 – Loveseat Sofa (Chenille). Its 26-inch seat depth ÷ 12 = 2.2, so 3 deep. Measure the seat width on your own couch with a tape, divide by 12 and round up for the squares across, then multiply by 3: that is your number of teaspoons.

Freshening one seat

Worked example 3 – one seat only. If only the dog's favorite seat smells, treat that seat: a 27.5-inch deep seat on the L-Shaped Modular Couch is 3 squares deep, so about 3 to 6 teaspoons, depending on width.

MONVANE model Width × seat depth (product page) Squares and amount (Light-Dust Rule)
Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater) 75-inch × 27.56-inch 7 × 3 = 21 squares, about 7 tablespoons
Loveseat Sofa (Chenille) 26-inch seat depth 3 deep × (your measured width ÷ 12) across
L-Shaped Modular Couch 103-inch × 27.5-inch (long side) 9 × 3 = 27 squares, about 9 tablespoons

The teaspoon amount is our own starting point, not a MONVANE instruction. The widths and depths come from the product pages.

Should you use baking soda and vinegar on a couch?

No: on a couch, baking soda and vinegar fizz into a wet mixture, and wet is what MONVANE's care answer warns against, along with harsh chemicals.

The fizz looks like cleaning, but on upholstery it mostly delivers liquid into the fabric and toward the foam. MONVANE's Product FAQ says not to wash the inner core and to wipe it with a damp cloth only if it is soiled. If a spot needs more than a dry freshen, use the in-place method in how to clean a couch without removing the covers: a cloth wrung out until no drops fall, in small sections, blotted dry. For upholstery stains of any kind, the NMSU fabric-care guide says to use as little moisture as possible.

Will baking soda leave marks on a dark couch?

It can, if you use too much or do not vacuum thoroughly: white grains show on black, navy and dark grey fabric, so use the Light-Dust Rule and vacuum twice in 2 directions.

  • Brush along the pile, then vacuum. Grains sit at the base of chenille piles.
  • Check in daylight. A haze that shows at an angle needs one more pass.
  • Finish with a lint roller. It picks up the last white flecks on dark fabric.

Getting all the baking soda out

Vacuum on low suction with an upholstery brush in 2 directions, then use the crevice tool along every seam and the joints between modules, where baking soda collects.

On a modular couch, pull the modules a little apart and vacuum the sides and the floor under the joints. Do not dry the fabric with heat afterward; MONVANE's care answer says to avoid direct heat.

When should you skip baking soda?

Skip baking soda on a couch when the problem is a wet spill, a stain that needs blotting, a smell from a new couch that only needs airing, or fabric whose care instructions say otherwise.

  • New couch smell. MONVANE's Product FAQ says a slight odor on opening is normal and dissipates with ventilation.
  • Wet spills. Baking soda on a wet spot turns into paste. Blot vertically right away instead—note that MONVANE chenille couches have no wash label, cannot be machine- or hand-washed, and are not water-resistant, so colored liquids (coffee, wine, tea, pet urine) can still leave a mark even if blotted immediately.
  • Anything unclear. Ask Support with a photo. The product FAQ lists a 2-year limited warranty plus one additional year after registration.

A customer review of the U-Shaped Modular Couch published on the product page (Olivia S., March 5, 2026) calls it "Not real smelly," which fits the Product FAQ: airing usually does the job.

If the smell comes back within days

Baking soda only freshens the surface. A smell that returns quickly usually has a source, such as a spill that reached the foam. Contact MONVANE Support with a photo instead of adding more powder.

If the fabric is crushed velvet

Skip baking soda on crushed velvet, such as the Cushioned Modular and Human & Pet sofas: grains press into the pile and are hard to lift. Vacuum on low suction and air the room instead.

This guide covers freshening with baking soda; for spot cleaning, see the in-place guide above, and for all fabrics see Materials & Durability or the chenille collection.

Questions about baking soda on a couch

These answers cover the follow-up questions people ask before they reach for the box.

Is it okay to leave it on overnight?

You can, but a few hours with the room airing is usually enough, and a shorter wait means less chance of pets or kids walking it around. Whatever the time, vacuum every grain out.

What if I don't own a vacuum?

It is hard to get it all out without one. Brush it off along the pile onto a sheet, then use a lint roller. On zippered covers, take them off and shake them out outdoors first.

Will it get rid of dog smell?

It can freshen a seat a dog uses, but launder any throw on it by that throw's own care instructions first; the layer the dog lies on usually holds most of the smell.

Is it suitable for chenille and velvet?

On chenille, only dry and thin, and MONVANE's care lines do not list it: test on a hidden spot first, keep everything completely dry, brush along the pile, and vacuum on low suction. Skip it on crushed velvet.

Can I make a paste with water for stains?

Not on upholstery. A paste is wet, and MONVANE's care answer says to avoid excess moisture. Blot the stain with a damp, wrung-out cloth instead.
