How to Dog-Proof Your Couch: Hair, Nails, Dirt, Digs, Chews

Everyday ways to protect a couch from dog hair, nails, dirt, digging and chewing: a properly sized throw, the dog's own spot, a step instead of the armrest, and model-appropriate care, with MONVANE Human & Pet facts.

To protect a couch from dogs and dog-proof your seats against hair, nails and dirt, cover the dog's favorite seat with a throw at least 40 inches front to back, give the dog its own spot, and keep its nails off the arms by offering a step up. Then vacuum the hair and wash the throw that takes the dirt, not the couch.

Before you start

Look at what your couch already has. The Human & Pet Modular Sofa (4 Seats) includes a fully detachable dog seat module that can attach to the sectional or stand alone as a dog bed. On other couches, a throw and a dog bed do the same jobs.

Protecting the couch and training the dog are separate jobs. Throws, a dog spot of its own and nail care protect the fabric. Training decides where the dog sits. You usually need both.

Dogs damage couches in 4 everyday ways: hair and dirt on the seat, nails on the arms and cushions, digging to make a nest, and chewing corners. Each has a simple fix, and none of them means keeping the dog off the couch for good.

What is the fastest way to protect a couch from a dog?

The fastest fix is a throw you can launder on the couch seat your dog uses most, tucked at the back so it stays put. A customer review of the U-Shaped Modular Couch says the buyer put a sheet over it so the dog would not get hair on it.

What size throw protects a couch from a dog

Tuck Rule: throw length (front to back) = seat depth + 6 inches to tuck behind the seat + 6 inches to drape over the front edge. The tuck holds the throw in place when the dog turns and lies down.

Deep modular seats

Worked example 1 – Human & Pet Modular Sofa (4 Seats). 27.56-inch seat depth: 27.56 + 6 + 6 = 39.56, so a throw about 40 inches front to back.

Loveseats

Worked example 2 – Loveseat Sofa (Chenille). 26-inch seat depth: 26 + 6 + 6 = 38 inches.

Worked example 3 – Boneless Sleeper Sofa. 21.65-inch seat depth: 21.65 + 6 + 6 = 33.65, so about 34 inches.

The 6-inch tuck and drape are our own starting point, not a MONVANE test. Width should cover the whole seat the dog uses, plus the arm it climbs over.

How do you protect a couch from dog nails and scratches?

Protect a couch from dog nails by covering the arm the dog climbs over, keeping nails trimmed, and giving small dogs a low step so they stop scrambling over the 9.84-inch armrests.

Most scratches happen on the way up, not while the dog is lying down. One U-Shaped Modular Couch owner, Michael B., wrote in a November 13, 2025 product-page review that animals' nails can snag the fabric "but a cover can stop that."

  1. Cover the climbing arm. Drape a throw over the arm your dog uses to jump.
  2. Add a step. A modular ottoman works as a step: another customer review of the U-Shaped Modular Couch (Michelle J., February 28, 2026) says the buyer chose an ottoman for a little dog to look out the window.
  3. Keep nails short. Shorter nails catch less fabric; ask your vet or groomer how often.

How do you stop a dog digging and chewing the couch?

Dogs dig to make a nest and chew when bored, so give them an allowed nest: a dog bed or dog seat module beside the couch. Add a blanket to scratch and a chew toy within reach.

  • A spot of its own. The Human & Pet dog seat module can attach to the sectional or stand alone on the floor as a dog bed, so the dog is close to you without digging into your seat.
  • Bedding to dig in. A folded blanket on the dog's spot gives it something to arrange.
  • Swap, don't scold. When the dog starts to dig or chew the couch, move it to its spot and offer a toy.
  • Block corners while you are out. Close the door to the room, or cover the corner the dog chews.

If your dog chews, treat torn foam like any other chewable object: the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises keeping small chewable objects out of a dog's reach and supervising play. Remove pieces right away and call your vet if you think any were swallowed.

Keeping the couch itself clean with a dog

Wash the throw first: launder throws weekly so they take the everyday hair and dirt. On MONVANE's crushed-velvet Human & Pet sofas, the zippered seat cushion and back pillow covers remove for cleaning per the care label, whereas MONVANE's chenille couches have attached covers with no wash label and cannot be washed by machine or hand—dry vacuum and spot-clean gently with a wrung-out damp cloth only. MONVANE chenille is not water-resistant (colored liquids or pet accidents can still leave a mark even if blotted right away), so a throw is the layer that takes spills. Between throw washes, a weekly pass with the upholstery brush stops hair from working into the weave; once a week is also the interval New Mexico State University's fabric-care guide gives for brushing or vacuuming upholstered furniture.

Never wash the inner foam core on any model: MONVANE's Product FAQ says not to wash, expose to direct sunlight, or iron the inner core, and ask MONVANE Support before applying any commercial cleaner or stain remover. For hair removal step by step, see how to get dog hair off a couch.

When a cover is not enough

The dog is chewing or digging every day

Covers will not stop a habit. That is a training or enrichment question for your vet or a trainer; keep the dog off the couch until it is solved.

The couch has repeated accidents

Throws only buy time. Clean each accident following your product page and talk to your vet if accidents are new.

Which MONVANE couch works best with a dog?

The Human & Pet Modular Sofa, in 4 or 6 seats, is the MONVANE couch built for dogs. It has a detachable dog seat module that attaches or stands alone; the 4-seat version is in stock in Dark Grey, Black and Navy.

Questions about protecting a couch from dogs

These answers cover the follow-up questions dog owners ask most.

How do I protect my couch from dog pee?

Keep the dog on its own spot, and put a throw on the seats it shares with you. On the Human & Pet sofas, the detachable dog seat module uses standard upholstery (not waterproof)—wipe spills promptly to help keep pet accidents away from the main sofa, and the zippered seat and back covers are removable. On attached-cover chenille couches (which are not water-resistant and cannot be washed), blot any accident vertically right away and dab gently with a wrung-out damp cloth—liquids can still leave a mark.

Will a dog ruin a velvet or chenille couch?

Not if the fabric is covered where the dog lies and climbs. Nails can snag any woven fabric, which is why the throw over the climbing arm matters most. Vacuum every 7 days so hair and grit do not wear the surface.

Should I let my dog on the couch at all?

That is your call. If the dog is allowed up, give it one set spot with a throw; if not, put its bed or dog module right next to the couch so it stays close to you.

How do I stop my dog from jumping on the armrest?

Give it an easier way up, such as a low ottoman or step at the front of the seat, and reward it for using that. Cover the arm it used to jump from until the habit changes.

Can the dog module go in another room?

Yes. MONVANE's product page says the Human & Pet dog seat module can attach directly to the sectional or be used as a standalone pet bed on the floor, so you can move it wherever the dog naps.

What about dog smell on the couch?

Wash the throw, vacuum the couch, and air the room. Keep sprays and harsh cleaners off the fabric; MONVANE's care answer says to avoid harsh chemicals and excess moisture.
