How to Fix Sagging Couch Cushions With a Yardstick Test
How to find out why a couch seat sags, fix removable and attached cushions at home, use the Sag Gap yardstick test to track it, and know when to contact Support. With MONVANE cushion facts.

On this page
To fix sagging couch cushions, removable or attached, first find the dip with a 36-inch yardstick, then redistribute the filling, move the cushion to a less-used seat, and check that the base sits flat on a level floor. Most sagging comes from one seat taking all the use or a top layer that has shifted, and both can be fixed at home without new foam.
Before you start
Check what is inside your seat. The Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats) lists dual-layer cushions, a shredded-cotton comfort layer over a 30D foam base, with zippered covers. The Convertible Loveseat is a boneless full-foam couch with no metal bars or springs and an attached cover. The fix depends on which you have.
Settling is not sagging. A new cushion feels softer as it breaks in, evenly across the seat. A sag is one spot that stays lower than the seat next to it. Use the Sag Gap below to tell which one you have.
A sagging seat is usually one of 4 things: a top layer that has bunched to the edges, one cushion that does all the work, a cushion sitting crooked on its base, or an uneven floor. Springs and broken frames are a different repair; full-foam couches like MONVANE's have neither, so this guide sticks to the cushion and the base.
How do you tell where a couch cushion is sagging?
Lay a 36-inch yardstick across the seat from front to back and measure the biggest gap under it with a tape measure; a 27.56-inch deep seat fits under one yardstick with room to spare.
- Clear the couch and let it sit empty for an hour, so the foam is not still pressed from use.
- Lay the yardstick across the middle of each seat, front edge to back pillow.
- Measure the deepest gap between the yardstick and the seat.
- Write it down for each seat, including the one nobody uses.
| Seat build | MONVANE example (product page) | First fix to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dual-layer cushion, zippered cover | Cushioned Modular Sofa (6 Seats): shredded-cotton top over 30D foam, 27.56-inch seat depth | Open the cover and spread the top layer |
| Full-foam boneless seat, attached cover | Convertible Loveseat: boneless full foam, no metal bars or springs | Press from the edges; lift the removable top cushion |
| Seat built into each module | Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater): 75-inch, 27.56-inch seat depth, 30D foam | Re-seat modules; move the favorite seat |
| Large chenille modular | L-Shaped Modular Couch: 103-inch, 27.5-inch seat depth, 1,500 lb capacity | Check the floor under each module first |
The seat nobody uses is your baseline. A dip only in the favorite seat means uneven use; a dip in every seat on one side points to the floor or base.

What the Sag Gap measures
Sag Gap = cushion gap on the favorite seat − cushion gap on the least-used seat. Any Sag Gap above 0 means wear is uneven: fix it and swap seats, then measure again after 7 days. It turns "this seat feels flat" into a number you can track.
One favorite seat
Worked example 1 – Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats). Favorite seat 0.75 inches, least-used seat 0.25 inches: 0.75 − 0.25 = 0.5 inches of Sag Gap. Redistribute the cotton layer, swap the cushions between seats, and measure again in a week.
Corner and end seats
Worked example 2 – L-Shaped Modular Couch. Corner seat 0.5 inches, end seat 0.5 inches: 0.5 − 0.5 = 0. The seats match, so the "sag" is the cushion's normal give, not wear.
A whole side lower than the other
Worked example 3 – every seat on one side. Left seats 1 inch, right seats 0.25 inches. That pattern points to the floor or base, not the foam: check the floor before you touch the cushions.
The gaps above are examples, not MONVANE measurements; the Sag Gap is our own routine.
How do you fix sagging couch cushions you can remove?
For a removable cushion, unzip the cover, spread the top layer back evenly over the foam, keep the anti-slip side down, and move it to a seat that gets less use.
- Redistribute the top layer. On dual-layer cushions like the Cushioned Modular and Human & Pet Modular Sofa (4 Seats), the shredded-cotton layer can drift to the edges. Open the cover and spread it back across the middle by hand.
- Keep it grip side down. MONVANE seat cushions are single-sided with an anti-slip bottom, so never flip them. New Mexico State University's fabric-care guide suggests turning cushions only when they are reversible; for single-sided cushions, spread the wear by swapping seats instead.
- Swap seats. Trade it with a same-size cushion from a quieter seat.
- Re-seat it square. Push it fully back against the back pillow, with no gap at the rear.
Leave the 30D foam itself alone: MONVANE's Product FAQ says not to wash, expose to direct sunlight, or iron the inner core. Adding extra foam or batting inside a cover is a bigger change; ask MONVANE Support first.

How do you fix sagging couch cushions that are attached?
For attached or non-removable seats, you cannot move the cushion, so change where the weight goes: press the foam back from the edges toward the dip, swap seating positions, and lift any removable part.
- Press toward the dip. With the seat empty, press flat palms from the outer edges in toward the low spot, then pat the whole seat.
- Move the favorite seat. Swap who sits where, or turn the couch's best TV seat into the end seat for a while.
- Use the parts that move. On the Convertible Loveseat, the 1-piece top seat cushion is removable; lift it, check the U-shaped base underneath, and set it back square with its anti-slip grip bottom facing down (never flip it).
- Re-seat modules. On modular couches whose seats are built into each module, such as the Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater), push each module tight against its neighbor so no seat is half on a gap.

Check the floor and base first
Yes: a couch that sits directly on the floor, like a boneless or modular foam couch, follows every dip and slope in the floor beneath it, so check the base before blaming the cushion.
- Put a level on the floor where each module sits.
- Check that each module's non-slip base lies fully flat, not half on a rug edge.
- Pull modules apart, sweep under them, and push them back tight.
- If the floor slopes, move the couch or put the whole couch on one flat rug.

When a DIY fix is not the right fix
The seat is attached and still dips
Do not cut into an attached cover or add plywood under a boneless seat. Measure the dip, take a photo and go to the warranty section below.
The dip came back after swapping seats
If a swapped cushion sags in the same place within days, it is a support question, not a fluffing one.
When is a sagging couch a warranty question?
Contact MONVANE Support if the Sag Gap stays the same after 2 weekly checks, a cushion arrived uneven, or a seam has opened. The product FAQ lists a 2-year limited warranty plus one additional year after registration.
Send your order number, photos of the yardstick test and the Sag Gap numbers. For a sense of normal wear, a customer review of the U-Shaped Modular Couch published on the product page (Olivia S., March 5, 2026) reports "no sag or indentations" 4 months in; that is one review, not a test.
This guide covers fixing sag. For flat cushions that just need plumping, see the sofa cushion insert checklist; for cushions that slide, see how to keep a sectional from separating. Browse all layouts in the modular couch collection.
Questions about sagging couch cushions
These answers cover the follow-up questions people ask about sinking seats.
How do I fix sagging back cushions?
Stand each back pillow upright, pat the top corners and push down gently so the filling settles evenly. Then push the seat cushion fully back against it, because a back pillow with nothing in front of it slumps forward.
Should I put plywood under sagging couch cushions?
That fix is for couches with springs or webbing. A full-foam couch has no springs to bridge, so a board does not help and can make the seat feel hard. Check the cushion, the base and the floor instead.
Can I replace the foam in a sagging cushion?
Ask MONVANE Support before you change an insert, especially while the couch is under warranty. In most cases, redistributing the top layer and swapping seats close the Sag Gap.
Why does only one seat sag?
Because it gets most of the use. Swap it with a quieter seat every 7 days and re-measure; if the Sag Gap shrinks, uneven use was the cause.
Do new couch cushions sag at first?
A new compressed couch can look uneven while the foam recovers. MONVANE's Product FAQ says it needs around 72 hours to fully recover, and foam rebounds more slowly below 77°F. Judge sag only after that.
