How to Get Wrinkles Out of Couch Cushions: Creased Covers

Why new and boneless couch cushions wrinkle, how to smooth attached and zippered covers by hand, what the MONVANE Product FAQ says about heat, and a 24-48-72 Crease Check you can follow.

To get wrinkles out of couch cushions, give a new compressed couch its full recovery time (around 72 hours, per MONVANE's Product FAQ), tap the corners, then smooth each cover from the center outward with flat palms. If a zippered cover is creased, unzip it, push every corner of the insert into the matching corner of the cover, and zip it closed again.

Before you start

Check whether your cover comes off. The Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats) lists zippered removable seat cushion and back pillow covers; the Convertible Loveseat says "Attached cover—spot clean with a damp cloth." Just unboxed? MONVANE's Product FAQ says foam rebounds more slowly below 77°F.

A wrinkle is not a sag. A wrinkle is loose cover fabric sitting on foam that is still recovering; it smooths as the foam fills the cover. A sag is a seat that stays lower than its neighbor after the recovery time on your product page. This guide covers wrinkles only.

Most cushion wrinkles on a boxed couch are not damage. They come from 3 things: foam that is still recovering from vacuum compression, a cover that shifted while the foam expanded, or an insert that went back into its cover slightly crooked after washing. Each has a different fix.

Why new couch cushions wrinkle

A compressed couch ships vacuum-packed, so the cover is folded tight against the foam until it expands; MONVANE product pages give 48 to 72 hours for full recovery, depending on the model.

While the foam grows back, the fabric has to catch up. Creases tend to sit where the cushion was folded in the box and along seams. They usually soften as the foam fills the cover, which is why the first fix is time, not force.

Model Cover type (product page) Recovery time (product page)
Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater), 75-inch Chenille; 27.56-inch seat depth Up to 72 hours
Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats), 27.56-inch seat depth Zippered removable seat and back pillow covers; 106-inch overall width 72 hours
Convertible Loveseat Attached chenille cover (no wash label; not washable—spot clean with a wrung-out damp cloth) 48–72 hours
L-Shaped Modular Couch, 103-inch Chenille; 27.5-inch seat depth; 65-inch overall depth, 30-inch height 48–72 hours (product FAQ)

How do you get wrinkles out of a new compressed couch?

On a new compressed couch, wait the full 72 hours in a warm room, gently tap the corners, and smooth the fabric by hand; MONVANE's Product FAQ says tapping corners can speed up expansion.

  1. Remove all the plastic first. Open the inner film carefully with the included unboxing opener keeping the blade away from the fabric, and avoid pointed household scissors—the Product FAQ warns that scissors may scratch the upholstery.
  2. Warm the room. The Product FAQ says that below 77°F foam rebounds more slowly, and you can "manually shake" or "pat flat" to help. Warm does not mean sunny: New Mexico State University's fabric-care guide advises keeping upholstered furniture out of direct sunlight, which can damage and fade fabric.
  3. Tap the corners. Work around each cushion and tap the corners outward so the foam pushes into the cover.
  4. Smooth, don't pull. Run flat palms from the middle of each cushion toward its edges. Pulling on seams can stretch them.
  5. Stay off it if you can. Light sitting is fine, but in our routine we hold off on heavy use until the check window ends.

How do you get wrinkles out of a boneless couch?

On a boneless or attached-cover couch such as the Convertible Loveseat, smooth wrinkles in place: press flat palms from the center of the seat toward each edge, then pat the edges so the foam pushes into the fabric.

Boneless couches are full foam with no frame inside, and an attached cover cannot be taken off to straighten. That means the work happens on the couch:

  • Center to edge. Sweep your palms outward in straight lines, like smoothing a bed sheet.
  • Seat, then back. Do the seat first, then the backrest from top to bottom.
  • Move the parts that move. On the Convertible Loveseat, the 1-piece top seat cushion is removable; lift it off, smooth the U-shaped base under it, then set the cushion back square with its textured anti-slip grip bottom facing down (never flip it).

How do you fix creases in a zippered cushion cover?

For a zippered cover, such as on the Cushioned Modular or Human & Pet Modular Sofa, unzip it, line every corner of the insert up with the cover's corners, smooth the top layer flat, and zip it fully closed.

Both sofas list dual-layer cushions with a shredded-cotton comfort layer on top of a 30D foam base. If that top layer bunches to one side, the cover wrinkles over the gap. Fix it with the cover open:

  1. Unzip and slide the cover partly off.
  2. Work the shredded-cotton layer flat across the whole foam base with open hands.
  3. Push each insert corner into the matching cover corner.
  4. Check that the cover's seams run along the cushion's edges, not across the top.
  5. Zip fully closed, then pat all 4 corners.

Washing the cover first? Follow the care instructions for the cover, and never wash the inner core. For the washing steps, see how to wash couch cushion covers.

Can you use heat or steam on couch wrinkles?

Keep hot irons and direct heat off upholstery and foam: MONVANE's Product FAQ warns never to iron or sun-dry the inner core, and product-page care guidance says to avoid direct heat.

Hand smoothing and a warm room (77°F or above) solve most compression creases safely without risking pile distortion. If a stubborn fold stays after the full 72-hour recovery window, send a photo to MONVANE Support before using any garment steamer on your model and fabric.

  • Never iron the core. The Product FAQ says: do not wash, expose to direct sunlight, or iron the inner core.
  • No hair dryers on the foam. That is direct heat, which the care answer says to avoid.
  • No soaking. Spraying water to "relax" a crease adds the excess moisture the same care answer warns against.

The 24-48-72 Crease Check

24-48-72 Crease Check: look at every crease at 24, 48 and 72 hours after unboxing, smoothing by hand after each look. Number of checks = recovery hours ÷ 24. A crease that is still sharp after the last check is a cover problem, not a recovery problem.

Zippered covers

Worked example 1 – Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats). The page lists 72 hours, so 72 ÷ 24 = 3 checks. If a seat crease is still there at check 3, unzip that cover and realign the insert.

Attached covers

Worked example 2 – Convertible Loveseat. The page lists 48–72 hours, so 48 ÷ 24 = 2 checks at minimum, up to 3. Smooth the attached cover in place after each one.

Cool rooms below 77°F

Worked example 3 – Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater). Up to 72 hours means up to 3 checks. In a room below 77°F, foam rebounds more slowly, so treat check 3 as the earliest point to judge, not a deadline.

When smoothing is not the right fix

The crease is still there after the recovery time

If a fold stays after the recovery window your product page gives, treat it as a support question rather than a wrinkle. Send MONVANE Support a photo with the order number.

The cover is attached

On an attached cover, do not try to pull or re-seat the fabric over the foam. Smooth it by hand only and leave the rest to recovery time.

When should you contact MONVANE about wrinkles?

Contact MONVANE Support if a cushion still shows a sharp crease or uneven shape after the full recovery time in a warm room, or if a seam or the fabric looks damaged. Send your order number and clear photos.

The product FAQ says to keep the packaging and contact support with your order number and photos if something arrives damaged, and lists a 2-year limited warranty plus one additional year after registration.

For reference, a customer review of the U-Shaped Modular Couch published on the product page (Chloe F., February 28, 2026) says it "does not sink in after allowing the 72 hours needed." One review is not a test, but it matches the advice: give the foam its time before you judge.

This guide covers wrinkles and creases. For flat, tired cushions, see the sofa cushion insert checklist; for the full unboxing timeline, see how to unbox a compressed couch. All layouts are in the modular couch collection.

Questions about couch cushion wrinkles

These answers cover the follow-up questions people ask about creased and wrinkled cushions.

Do the wrinkles on a new boxed couch go away on their own?

Most do. As the compressed foam recovers over 48 to 72 hours, depending on the model, it fills the cover and the fold lines soften. Tapping the corners and smoothing by hand helps. Judge the cushions only after the full recovery time in a warm room.

Why does a cushion look wrinkled after I washed the cover?

Usually the insert went back in off-center or the shredded-cotton top layer bunched. Unzip the cover, smooth the top layer flat, push each insert corner into the cover corner, and zip it fully closed.

Can I iron a couch cushion to get creases out?

Not the cushion itself. MONVANE's Product FAQ says never to iron the inner core, and the care answer says to avoid direct heat. Ask Support before using any heat on your model.

Is it okay to sit on the couch while the creases settle?

Light sitting is fine; one reviewer of the U-Shaped Modular Couch said her family used theirs right after opening the boxes. Even weight is better than kneeling or standing on one spot, which can press a crease in deeper.

How do I smooth a cushion that does not come off?

Press flat palms from the center of the seat out to each edge, then pat the edges so the foam pushes into the fabric. Do the seat first, then the back, and repeat after each crease check.
