How Long Does New Couch Smell Last? How to Air It Out

To get rid of new couch smell, open the box in a room you can ventilate, take every piece of plastic outside, and keep fresh air moving for the 48 to 72 hours the foam needs to expand. Check the expansion time on your product page, because that is your airing plan. The Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats) says to allow up to 72 hours; the Loveseat Sofa (Chenille) lists 48 hours; the Boneless Sleeper Sofa lists 48 to 72 hours. You need the included utility knife, a trash bag for the film, and a window or exhaust fan you can run. Cold room? The Product FAQ says foam rebounds more slowly below 77°F.

How long does new couch smell last?
For a compressed MONVANE couch, plan on the 48 to 72 hours listed for foam expansion as your airing window, with fresh air moving the whole time. The Product FAQ calls a slight odor at opening normal and says it dissipates with ventilation; it does not give a fixed number of hours, and neither will we.
What changes how long you notice it is mostly the room: how much fresh air comes in, how much plastic is still lying around, and whether the foam has finished expanding. A sofa still recovering in a cold, closed room is the slowest case.

Why does a new compressed couch smell?
A compressed couch is sealed in plastic film for shipping, so the room you open it in is the first fresh air its foam and fabric meet since packing. MONVANE's Product FAQ treats a slight odor at that moment as normal.
That is also why a "couch in a box" can smell more when you open it than a sofa from a showroom floor: a showroom sofa has been sitting in open air, and yours has been sealed until now. The fix is the same either way: air, time, and getting the packaging out of the room.
Two situations are different and worth a message: a smell that is still strong after the full 72 hours with fresh air moving, and any smell that gets stronger instead of fading. Those are reasons to contact MONVANE Support rather than to air longer.
What is the Air-Out Window?
Air-Out Window: start airing a new couch the moment you cut the inner film, and keep fresh air moving until the expansion time on your product page has passed. Ready time = unboxing time + listed expansion hours. If your product page gives a range, plan on the top of the range.
The rule uses the number you already have: each MONVANE product page lists how long its compressed foam needs to expand. Airing for that same window means the smell and the expansion are handled together, and you are not judging comfort or smell on a sofa that is still recovering.
Worked example 1 – a sectional before a weekend. The Cushioned Modular Sofa (4 Seats) ships in 2 packages and says to allow up to 72 hours. 72 ÷ 24 = 3 days. Unbox at 6 pm Friday: ready time = Friday 6 pm + 3 days = Monday 6 pm. Air the room all weekend, and save the first long movie night for Monday.
Worked example 2 – a sofa bed before Thanksgiving. The Boneless Sleeper Sofa lists 48 to 72 hours, so plan on 72. For a guest arriving at 6 pm on Wednesday, November 25, 2026: 72 hours is 3 days, and 25 − 3 = 22, so the latest unboxing time is 6 pm on Sunday, November 22. Cut the film earlier if you can, so the guest room is aired and the sleeper is fully expanded before anyone sleeps on it.
Worked example 3 – a 48-hour loveseat. The Loveseat Sofa (Chenille) lists 48 hours. 48 ÷ 24 = 2 days, so unbox at 10 am Saturday and the ready time is 10 am Monday.
How do you air out a new couch, step by step?
To air out a new couch, unbox it in its final room, remove all plastic, open windows or run an exhaust fan, and leave every cushion uncovered for the full 48 to 72 hours on the product page.
- Pick the room first. MONVANE's Setup & Delivery page says to open the box in your chosen room and let the sofa expand there. Choose that room knowing it needs fresh air for the next 2 to 3 days.
- Cut only with the included utility knife. The Product FAQ says: “Use the included utility knife; do NOT use scissors to cut the inner film, which may scratch the product.”
- Take every piece of film out of the room. Bag the plastic and move it and the carton outside or to the garage; a pile of film in the corner keeps the smell in the room. Keep the packaging until you are sure you will keep your sofa, as the Setup & Delivery page advises.
- Get fresh air moving. The U.S. EPA notes that opening windows and doors, or running window or attic fans when the weather permits, increases the outdoor ventilation rate. A bathroom or kitchen fan that vents outdoors helps too.
- Leave cushions and pillows uncovered. No throws, slipcovers or sheets until the window has passed, so air reaches every side while the foam expands.
- Keep the room comfortable, not hot. In cold weather, air in short bursts with the heating on rather than leaving the room cold all day; foam rebounds more slowly below 77°F. Do not point a heater, hair dryer or direct sunlight at the cushions.
- Check at the ready time. Sit on every seat. If the smell is still strong, keep airing and contact Support with photos.
How long do MONVANE couches take to expand and air out?
MONVANE product pages list 48 hours, 48 to 72 hours, or up to 72 hours of expansion, depending on the model; use that number as your Air-Out Window.

Ordering a multi-package sectional? The Product FAQ notes that compressed modular sofas may ship in multiple packages at different times. What should you not use on a new-couch smell?
Skip harsh chemicals, heavy sprays, heat and soaking: MONVANE product pages say to avoid harsh chemicals, excessive moisture and direct heat, and the Product FAQ says never to wash, sun or iron the inner core.
- No soaking or steam-cleaning the foam. The Product FAQ: "Do not wash, expose to direct sunlight, or iron the inner core. Wipe with a damp cloth only if soiled."
- No fragrance on top of a smell. A scented spray only masks the smell and makes it harder to tell whether it is fading. If you want to use any fabric product, the product pages say to follow the care label and confirm cleaning instructions before applying it.
- No sunny windowsill for cushions. Air the room, not the cushions in direct sun.
- No hot storage for an unopened box. The Product FAQ says not to expose unopened compressed packaging to temperatures above 150°F (50°C), so do not leave it in a hot car or a sun-baked garage while you wait to set up.
Optional and gentle: once the window has passed, follow your model's care line, which on the Convertible Loveseat is to spot clean gently with a damp cloth. If cleaning instructions are unclear, ask MONVANE Support before applying any product.
What does an OEKO-TEX badge mean for a new couch?
An "OEKO-TEX® Certified" badge, shown on MONVANE pages such as the L-Shaped Modular Couch and Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater), is a textile testing label, not a smell rating.
The Materials & Durability page says certified textile materials "have been tested for harmful substances under OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100." The same page says certifications are communicated only when they can be matched to the selected product, so check the badge on the exact product page you are buying from; on October 16, 2026 it appeared on pages such as the L-Shaped Modular Couch and the Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater).
The badge does not tell you how long an opening smell lasts. For that, use the Air-Out Window and fresh air.
When should you contact MONVANE Support about a smell?
Contact MONVANE Support if the smell gets stronger instead of fading, or is still strong after the full 48 to 72 hours with fresh air moving. Send your order number and clear photos of the sofa and packaging.

Why does my new couch smell like chemicals or plastic?
A compressed couch has been sealed in plastic film since packing, so the first hours after opening are when you notice it most. MONVANE's Product FAQ calls a slight odor at opening normal and says it dissipates with ventilation. Remove all film from the room and keep fresh air moving.
What if the smell bothers someone in the home?
Keep the sofa room ventilated with the door closed, let that person stay in another room during the airing window, and contact MONVANE Support with your order number if the smell does not fade.
Can I wash the covers to remove the smell?
On models with zippered removable covers, such as the Cushioned Modular and Human & Pet sofas, follow the care label on the cover. Never wash the inner core; the Product FAQ says to wipe it with a damp cloth only if soiled.
Does cold weather make the smell last longer?

Can guests sleep on a new sofa bed the first night?

How long does a new couch take to arrive before the holidays?
