How to Clean a Chenille Couch: Spills, Stains and Dust
A weekly routine and a spill-by-spill guide for chenille upholstery, built on the MONVANE care line: spot clean gently with a damp cloth, and avoid harsh chemicals, excess moisture and direct heat. With a holiday prep plan.

On this page
To clean a chenille couch, vacuum it with an upholstery brush every 7 days, and treat spills by blotting, then spot cleaning with a damp (not wet) cloth, working from the outside of the mark inward. That matches the care line on MONVANE chenille product pages: "Spot clean gently with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, excessive moisture, and direct heat."
Before you start
Grab 2 white microfiber cloths, a spray bottle or bowl of lukewarm water, an upholstery brush on your vacuum, and the care label for your model. MONVANE chenille models such as the Convertible Loveseat, the L-Shaped Modular Couch and the Boneless Sleeper Sofa each carry their own care instructions; the Boneless page says to contact Support before applying a product if the instructions are unclear. Test any cleaning mix on a hidden spot first.
Chenille has a soft, raised pile, which is why it feels good and why it needs a gentle hand: scrubbing and soaking are what flatten it or leave a water ring. Hosting this holiday season? The prep plan below has you cleaning 2 days before guests arrive, so every spot is fully dry.
How do you clean a chenille couch week to week?
Vacuum a chenille couch once every 7 days with a soft upholstery brush, moving with the pile, and spot clean only the marks you see; MONVANE chenille care lines list spot cleaning, not soaking.
- Weekly: vacuum seats, arms, back and crevices with the upholstery brush. Lift throws and lumbar pillows and vacuum underneath.
- Same day: blot any spill before it soaks in, then spot clean with the steps below.
- Monthly: rotate or turn cushions and pillows that come off, and brush the pile lightly in one direction with a soft clothes brush.

What is the Damp-Not-Wet Rule?
Damp-Not-Wet Rule: a cloth is ready when you wring it and no drop falls, and you clean an area no bigger than the mark plus 1 inch around it. Cleaning area width = mark width + 2 inches. A wet cloth pushes water into the foam below, and a big wet patch dries with a ring at its edge.
Our starting mix, for marks that plain water does not lift: 1 teaspoon of clear, mild dish soap in 2 cups of lukewarm water. Test it on a hidden spot first and let it dry. If your model's care instructions are unclear, ask MONVANE Support before applying any product; the Boneless Sleeper Sofa page says exactly that.
Worked example 1 – a coffee drip on the Convertible Loveseat. The mark is 2 inches wide, so the cleaning area is 2 + 2 = 4 inches wide. Blot with a dry cloth, then dab a damp cloth from the edge of that 4-inch circle toward the center, and blot dry.
Worked example 2 – half a batch. For a small spot, halve the mix: 2 cups ÷ 2 = 1 cup of water and 1 teaspoon ÷ 2 = ½ teaspoon of soap. Make a fresh mix each time.
Worked example 3 – a gravy smear on the 21.65-inch seat of the Boneless Sleeper Sofa. A 3-inch smear gives a cleaning area of 3 + 2 = 5 inches. Scrape off what you can with a spoon edge, blot, and work the 5-inch area with a plain-water damp cloth first. Its product page says to contact support@monvane.net before applying a product if cleaning instructions are unclear, so check before you reach for the mix.

How do you get a stain out of a chenille couch, step by step?
To get a stain out of a chenille couch, blot it dry, test your mix, dab from the outside in with a damp cloth, rinse with plain water, blot again, and let it air-dry before brushing the pile.
- Blot, don't rub. Press a dry white cloth onto the spill and lift; repeat with a clean part of the cloth until no more transfers.
- Scrape solids. Lift food with the edge of a spoon, toward the center of the mark.
- Test on a hidden spot. Try your water or mix on the back or underside, and let it dry, before touching the visible stain.
- Dab from the outside in. With a damp, wrung-out cloth, work from the edge of the cleaning area toward the center, so the mark does not spread.
- Rinse. Dab with a second cloth dampened in plain water to lift soap residue.
- Blot dry. Press a dry cloth on the area until it feels only slightly cool.
- Air-dry. Leave it in normal room air. MONVANE care lines say to avoid direct heat, so no hair dryer or heater.
- Brush the pile. Once fully dry, brush lightly in one direction to lift the loops.

How do you clean common holiday spills from chenille?
Treat holiday spills on a chenille couch the same way every time: blot fast, scrape solids, and spot clean with a damp cloth and the mild mix, testing on a hidden spot before you start.
| Spill | First move | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee or tea | Blot with a dry cloth right away | Damp cloth with the mild mix; rinse with plain water; blot |
| Red wine or juice | Blot; do not rub it outward | Damp cloth with plain water first, then the mild mix if needed; rinse; blot |
| Gravy, butter or other grease | Scrape with a spoon edge | Mild mix on a damp cloth (dish soap is made for grease); rinse; blot |
| Mud or paw prints | Let it dry completely | Vacuum the dried soil, then a damp cloth for what is left |
| Crumbs in seams | Lift cushions and pillows | Vacuum with the crevice tool; brush the pile |
If a stain does not move after 2 gentle rounds, stop. More water and harder scrubbing usually make chenille worse; contact Support or a professional upholstery cleaner and say it is chenille with a spot-clean care line.
How do you get a chenille couch ready for holiday guests?
Clean a chenille couch 2 days before guests arrive: vacuum on day 1, spot clean the same day, and leave the next day free so every damp spot can dry before anyone sits down.
- 2 days before: vacuum everything, then spot clean any marks with the Damp-Not-Wet Rule.
- 1 day before: check each spot is fully dry and brush the pile.
- On the day: put a washable throw on the seat closest to the food, and coasters on the coffee table, not the armrests.
- Sofa bed guests: on the Boneless Sleeper Sofa or Convertible Loveseat, use a fitted sheet or mattress protector when unfolded; see Can You Leave Sheets on a Sofa Bed?
What should you never use on a chenille couch?
Never use harsh chemicals, a soaking-wet cloth, or direct heat on MONVANE chenille; those three are named on the product pages, and the Product FAQ adds no washing, sun or ironing for the inner core.
- Bleach and strong solvents count as harsh chemicals.
- Steam cleaners and carpet machines add heat and a lot of moisture at once.
- Hair dryers and heaters are direct heat.
- Stiff brushes and hard rubbing pull and flatten the chenille pile.
For pet hair on chenille, a damp rubber glove usually lifts it without any cleaner; see our dog-proof couch guide for choosing pet-friendly fabric.
When should you contact MONVANE Support?
Contact MONVANE Support before you clean if your model's care label is unclear, or if your Boneless Sleeper Sofa or other chenille couch arrived with a mark or damage. Send your order number, the product name and clear photos.

Questions about cleaning chenille
These 6 answers cover the follow-up questions people ask about chenille upholstery on sofas and sofa beds.
Can you machine wash chenille couch upholstery?
Not unless your model's care label says so. The MONVANE chenille product pages in this guide list spot cleaning with a damp cloth, and the Product FAQ says the inner core must never be washed.
Does chenille pill?
Any woven pile can pill with friction. MONVANE's Loveseat Sofa (2 Seater) page describes its chenille as resisting pilling and everyday wear. If a few pills appear, trim them with a fabric shaver on its gentlest setting.
How do I get water stains or a water ring out of chenille?
Dampen the whole ring evenly with a wrung-out cloth from its outer edge inward, blot, and let it air-dry; a ring usually forms where a wet patch dried unevenly.
What do the cleaning codes on upholstery labels mean?
Many upholstery labels use W (water-based cleaner), S (solvent-based), W/S (either) and X (vacuum only). Check the code on your label before using any product; if there is none, ask Support.
How often should a chenille sofa be deep cleaned?
Weekly vacuuming and same-day spot cleaning cover most homes. For a deeper clean, ask a professional upholstery cleaner who will follow your care label.
Can I use baby wipes or disinfecting wipes on chenille?
Avoid them: they can leave residue, and disinfecting wipes can contain the harsh chemicals MONVANE care lines say to avoid. A soft cloth with plain water matches the MONVANE care lines.
